ELIZABETH GERALDINE TINSLEY BANKS ALEXANDER January 9, 1940 – January 20, 2022 Elizabeth G. Alexander was a devoted member of the Board of Directors of the Springfield & Central Illinois African American History Museum (AAHM) for several years. She worked diligently, doing whatever she could to make sure the AAHM was the best little Museum in Central Illinois. As a volunteer and Board member, she served in various capacities. She served as the Facility Administrator. In this position, she made sure everything that did not work was fixed. She purchased all supplies, and with Steve’s help, it was delivered to the Museum. She also organized our conference room and storage area, reminding all in her soft, uncompromising voice, to make sure we kept it that way. She served on the Membership Committee, Program & Exhibit Committee as well as the Summer Camp Committee. She served as Vice President of the Board of Directors and was a wise & confident advisor to the president of the Board at that time, Nell Clay. She worked on planning and researching exhibits for the Museum. Two of the exhibits she worked on are still on display at the Museum – The Four Oldest Black Churches of Springfield IL, and Early African American Pioneers from Springfield, IL She also volunteered as the graphic artist for the AAHM. She developed all the Museum’s flyers, Date Savers, and program covers. If you attended any of the AAHM’s fundraising galas, the beautiful program booklet covers were designed by Liz. She was one of the hardest working Board members the Museum has ever had and we dearly miss her. As her husband Steve said, “She was devoted to the Museum.” Liz was an active member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she also served in various capacities. She served as the genealogist for her family and made sure everyone knew that she loved her family and was very proud of them.
