A Juneteenth Celebration

News of the Emancipation Proclamation arrived in Galveston, TX on June 19th, 1865, nearly two years after its enactment in 1863.  The day is more than a day of parades, BBQs, and family gatherings, but rather it is a day to reflect on our achievements and accomplishments in this nation, state and city. This event will include an exhibit of the Juneteenth Timeline starting with the arrival of the first Africans to Virginia in 1619 to the signing of the Juneteenth declaration in 2021, making it a state and a national holiday. A walk through the timeline will explore the developments in race relations nationally, in Illinois, and in Springfield.
