July 9: Oak Ridge Cemetery – “The Colored Section”

The Oak Ridge Cemetery, which opened in 1862, is the second most visited cemetery in the country. This public cemetery has a ‘colored section’. Many notable African Americans who had a connection to Abraham Lincoln and made special contributions to Springfield are buried in the ‘colored section’.

This presentation will provide a history of the cemetery and the ‘colored section’, as well as brief biographies of some of the notable African Americans buried there
