Faith and race were significant social factors in the 1850s as they are today. By learning more of our history, we gain insight about our current realities.
Last year, for Black History Month and Presidents’ Day, First Presbyterian Church worked with Tiffani Saunders (then UIS faculty, now Memorial Health Consultant for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion), Kathryn Harris (African American History Museum), Randy Duncan, Looking for Lincoln, and staff from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to create an interview with President Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman. Our explorations of what the 1850s have to teach us about the 2020s was moving.
We all know that discrimination and oppression are real.
The work of dismantling racism in our society, community and in ourselves is vital to a future of peace with justice.
